Macross Rage
August 31, 2008 at 11:06 am | In Frustrations, Macross F, Pissed of with this series, Ranka Lee or Sheryl Nome | Leave a CommentFacing the hot topic of who Alto will choose in Macross Frontier, I will provide my own basis of argument on what should be or should not be involved in the rage and flaming debate of who Alto will choose. I will just provide passing views as a neutral to this argument. In fact, I feel that i’m edging over to Ranka’s side throughout the series.
Well, on the whole I feel that Ranka isn’t really cut out to be singer, she is weak and doesn’t know who she’s singing for. She’s been used as a tool for fighting and realises that after she founds out about Sheryl hugging Alto. Ranka realises that she only sings for Alto and not the people, it’s selfish on her part that her emotions stray out of control which induces the rage of the Vajra. The fact is that the whole SMS is under the control of the plot between Grace and Leon, seems to fool all the characters and SMS alike. They have been manipulated like chess pieces. Recently, in episode 20, Michel died but manages to confess his feelings of love for Klan. I admire Michel for his composure and mature thoughts. However, I despise the anime for ending him like that.
Back to the topic, I urge all not to get so fired up over who’s going to be with Alto in the end. In extreme cases which I heard, many Ranka haters actually post flaming remarks regarding Megumi Nakajima, the voice actress for Ranka. I must remind everyone that the seiyus have nothing to do with the story plot, so it’s saddening to see that people can’t seem to differentiate that.
Nevertheless, in a way I feel that with history of the Macross franchise and the story developments up to now, Alto will choose Sheryl Nome(Note that I am supporting Ranka). It’s been pretty obvious in the recent episodes where Sheryl sinks into despair after finding out about her illness which may eventually lead to her dying. With the support of the previous Macross series such as Macross 7 and Macross original, the male protagonist will always end up with the mature female heroine. I feel that the main focus on Ranka in the story is more on her past and her ability to relate the Vajras. In addition, Ranka seems to form the main plot of the story which is about her lost memories as well as her singing frequency which affects Vajra. On the other hand, Sheryl’s part in the story seems to be of not much significance except that she was the one who inspired Ranka to sing. That also forms a strong part of my basis of why Sheryl will end up with Alto. This is so as she doesn’t have much influence in the entire story plot, that means her introduction to the story is to maintain the romance tag of the macross series. This also means that Ranka as of many female heroines of past macross series such as Mao and Lynn Minmay will not end up with the main male protagonist but instead will have to fullfill the part of their plot. Sheryl Nome, with not much influence in the mecha plot of the anime, sole purpose in the anime is to be chosen by Alto. I would say it would be cruel to not let Alto choose her as she will be deem as a useless character ont he whole. Alto also seems to be thinking about her constantly and gets angry over her stubborn decision of refusing to sing anymore. This anger is depicted as that of concern and love for another which Alto did not seem to show towards Ranka. Alto basically treats Ranka like a younger sister. At times, during urgent situations, Alto spurred by the moment will treat Ranka as if of a mere tool for singing. This, I feel very sadden. When Sheryl is caught up in the fire with Nanase, a few rescuers are on the way to lead them to the shelter, Alto stills shows worry for her, Sheryl replies with a cool, “Who do you think I am!”. Then Alto pulls Ranka by the hand not considering her feelings but just pulling her along as it is a need. That is for her to sing to save the people.
I cannot describe how much frustration I have by watching the episodes 4 in a role. By watching 1 episode at a time, people tend to find Ranka irritating and grow to hate her. But when you watch it in bulk, you will realise that you will grow to attach to Ranka more. She has her problems but is always kept inside her heart and remains cheerful so as not to worry anyone. On the contrary, Sheryl have not encountered much problems in the earlier part of the anime and is beaming with confidence. In the later part of the series where she found out about her illness, the series portray her in a sympatising light. Michel and Klan manages to find out about this and this sort of sooths your heart of the frustration wielding inside. Ranka’s problems have never been shared with Alto. As many people feel that Sheryl is dying soon, so all sympathy is directed to her. But one thing is for sure is that Sheryl Nome will never die. Even if she does, she will capture the heart of Alto even after she dies. Maybe Alto may even die with her, thereby, ditching behind Ranka, which by then, will have matured and look at things in a different light.
Seriously, as a Ranka supporter, I feel sad…….
